IL roster set for July 11 All-Star Game
When the International and Pacific Coast League's best ballplayers meet for the 25th annual exhibition on July 11 in Buffalo, N.Y., the winner will earn the right to be the home team for the Triple-A National Championship Game on Sept. 18 in Durham, N.C.
And if the roster revealed Wednesday is any indication, at least one of the two leagues will be well-stocked for success.
The IL squad comprises 30 ballplayers: 13 "elected" by club managers and general managers, media members and through online fan voting; 17 "selected" by the league office; and at least one from each of the 14 clubs. The Pawtucket Red Sox and Charlotte Knights each send a game-high four players to participate, while the hometown Bisons will have three.
The roster not only features members of MLB.com's Top 100 Prospects -- pitcher Matt Harvey (No. 31, Mets), outfielder Starling Marte (No. 32, Pirates) and catcher Ryan Lavarnway (No. 79, Red Sox) -- but also the circuit's more experienced sluggers. Charlotte's Dan Johnson (18 home runs), Syracuse's Corey Brown (17) and Columbus' Matt LaPorta (16), who led his peers in fan voting, will undoubtedly test PCL pitching.
