It's power vs. contact for SAL All-Stars
The South Atlantic League All-Star teams are divided by the league's North and South Divisions, but if you peak at this year's rosters and didn't know any better, you'd think the league divvied up the hitters by their strengths and went from there.
When the teams meet up on June 18 at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, N.J., each of the top five leaders in home runs will suit up for the North squad, while the South's roster features five of the league's top six leaders in batting average.
Pacing the powerful North is West Virginia's Stetson Allie with his 16 home runs. The former pitcher is finding tremendous success in his first full season as a position player, and will start at first base for the North. Behind him on the homer leader board are a trio of Hickory Crawdads in Joey Gallo, Ryan Rua and Lewis Brinson. Gallo will start at third base and Brinson in center field, while Rua will serve as a backup infielder.
The team features six players from West Virginia, including starting shortstop Dilson Herrera and right fielder Josh Bell. Hickory is also sending six players, including starting pitcher C.J. Edwards. The lineup also features Micah Johnson, who entered Monday with a Minor League leading 47 stolen bases.
Savannah's Jayce Boyd entered Monday leading the SAL with a .350 batting average and will suit up at first base for the South. He'll be joined by teammate and catcher Kevin Plawecki, who is tied for second in the league with a .343 average. That tie is with the South's starting shortstop, Rosell Herrera. Rome outfielder Josh Elander brings a .335 average to the starting lineup, and Asheville's Francisco Sosa and his .330 average will be waiting on the bench for the South.
Augusta leads the South Division teams with six All-Stars, including starting third baseman Michael Delfino and center fielder Jesus Galindo. Charleston's Rafael De Paula, the league leader with 83 strikeouts in 54 1/3 innings, will get the start on the mound for the South.
Hosting Lakewood placed two players on the North roster, including starting catcher Chance Numata and pitcher Steven Inch.
