Jacobo paces Quakes' record night
Jacobo hit a grand slam and finished with a career-high six RBIs as Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga crushed High Desert, 23-8.
The Quakes (45-37) scored a run in every inning, becoming the second team in California League history to score in every frame of a nine-inning game. The San Jose Giants managed the feat in a 12-2 victory against Bakersfield on June 30, 2008. Rancho Cucamonga also set a team record in runs scored, breaking the old mark of 21 against Lancaster on Sept. 1, 2006.
Jacobo, who was a 10th-round pick by the Angels in 2008, drove in five runs for Class A Cedar Rapids on May 8, 2009. The 23-year-old California native plated a run with a first-inning single, hit an RBI triple in the second and capped his night with an eighth-inning slam. Jacobo also scored twice for Rancho Cucamonga.
Every starter in the lineup finished with at least two hits for the Quakes, who amassed 25 hits. Angel Castillo slugged a pair of two-run homers and Dwayne Bailey drove in three runs. Dillon Baird finished a triple shy of the cycle and Clay Fuller was 4-for-5 with two doubles and four runs scored.
Matt Shoemaker (7-6) was the beneficiary of the Quakes' offense, allowing seven runs on 12 hits and striking out five over six innings. Jose Perez fanned two and allowed one hit over two shutout innings of relief.
Denny Almonte slugged a pair of solo homers and Dennis Raben added a three-run homer for the Mavericks (45-37). Almonte has gone yard five times in his last 10 games, including three in the last two days.
