Jay, 'Birds outslug Ramirez, Chasers

Rehabbing Cardinals outfielder goes deep, triples in victory
June 20, 2012
Omaha may be the center of the college baseball world this week, but Jon Jay did his part Wednesday to steal some headlines.

Jay, rehabbing a shoulder injury, went 2-for-4 with a homer, triple and three runs scored to spark Triple-A Memphis past the host Omaha Storm Chasers, 13-9, on Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals outfielder was joined in production by Mark Hamilton, who also went deep and helped the Redbirds pound out 14 hits.

Jay, who went 1-for-3 in his first rehab game on Tuesday, hit a solo drive in the third off Omaha starter Ryan Verdugo and added a two-run triple off Blaine Hardy in the seventh after walking in the sixth. Hamilton's three-run drive also came off Verdugo as Memphis took a 5-2 lead by the fifth.

Jay was batting .343 in 27 games before landing on St. Louis's 15-day disabled list on May 15. The center fielder, who's expected to rejoin the Cardinals later this week, is 3-for-7 with a walk and three RBIs in his two games.

Omaha had plenty of firepower as well, with Max Ramirez hitting two of Omaha's four home runs on the day. Tony Abreu hit his seventh in the eighth inning, a two-run shot, and David Lough added a three-run homer in the sixth.

Ramirez, hitting .293 this season, entered the game with six homers but smacked his seventh in the second, a two-run shot, and his eighth in the fifth, both off Memphis starter John Gast.

Royals No. 2 prospect Wil Myers went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and rehabbing Salvador Perez went 4-for-4 and scored three times for Omaha, which totaled 13 hits.
