Kernels win game one, 6-4, in 10 innings

Peoria, IL - The Cedar Rapids Kernels took the first game in a best-of-three series with the Peoria Chiefs by the score of 6-4 in 10 innings on Thursday night. Gabe Jacobo led the Kernels offense, going 2-5 with a HR and two runs scored as Kernels starter Will Smith allowed two run on five hits over seven innings and struck out seven in a no-decision effort.

The Chiefs, the MWL top offense, rallied for two runs in the bottom ninth inning to tie the game at 4-4 with the big blow a two run homer by Jovan Rosa off Kernel reliever Andrew Taylor. The Kernels ralled for two runs in the top of the 10th as Alexi Amarisa scored on a wild pitch by reliever Kevin Kreier. The next batter, Beau Brooks lined a single into right field to score Roberto Lopez and make the final, 6-4 Kernels.

Peoria starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked two and struck out one over six innings in a no-decision effort. Rosa finished the game 2-4 with 3 RBI and Junior Lake was 3-4 with two doubles.

The Kernels look to close out the Chiefs at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday, September 10th as Tyler Chatwood takes the mound for the Kernels against Jeffry Antigua for Peoria.
