KEYS LEFT STRANDED IN 6-1 LOSS

Kinston entered Friday night's game winners of four straight and 11 of their last 13. Their hot streak would continue as they defeated Frederick by five runs on the 2nd annual NAACP/Negro League Appreciation Night. The Indians scored all six of their runs in the first two innings of game against Keys' starter Rick Zagone, in the 6-1 win over Frederick. The Keys had plenty of opportunities to climb back into the game as they loaded the bases three different times but were unable to score a run in any of those situations. With the loss, Frederick fell to 25-17 while Kinston improved to 22-20.

The Indians jumped out to a quick start on Friday night plating two runs in the top of the first. With the bases loaded and one down, 3B Kyle Bellows drove home two on a RBI single.

Following a scoreless bottom of the first for Frederick, Kinston tacked on four more on one swing of the bat. SS Karexon Sanchez took the Zagone pitch deep to rightfield for a grand slam. Sanchez's grand slam was the first one by a Keys opponent since August 30, 2009.

Trailing 6-0 entering the bottom of the second, 2B Miguel Abreu hit the first pitch he saw from LHP Nick Hagadone for a homerun to rightfield. Abreu was sent to Frederick Friday morning from AA Bowie. He hit .275 with six homeruns with the Keys in 2008.

Abreu's homerun, however, would be the only run Frederick would score all night.

The Keys loaded the bases in the third, fourth, and eighth inning but did not score one run. On the night, Frederick left 12 runners on base and hit just 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. The Keys also struck out 16 times on the evening.

Frederick's bullpen pitched flawlessly in the defeat. RHP John Mariotti threw four scoreless innings and LHP Brett Bordes followed with three scoreless innings.

Rick Zagone fell to 1-5 in the loss while Rob Bryson improved to 1-0. Kinston's starter, Hagadone, struck out seven and allowed one run in 3.1 innings of work.

The Keys will look to rebound Saturday night against the Indians. Kinston will pitch LHP T.J. House (1-3, 3.49) while the Keys starter is TBA. First pitch is at 6 p.m. for Family Fitness Night at Harry Grove Stadium. Saturday is also a Keys for Reading night for private and home schools. Fireworks will follow the game.
