Knights Charge Past Bulls 14-2 In Opener

Fort Mill, SC --- The Charlotte Knights used two big innings to blitz the Durham Bulls 14-2 in the series opener at Knights Stadium on Monday night.

The Knights (5-7) took advantage of 12 walks and amassed 12 hits in the victory, which saw Charlotte score seven times in the fourth to knock out Durham starter Alex Torres (L, 1-1).

Charlotte scored the game's first run in the first on a bases loaded walk, then a solo homer by Dallas McPherson in the third pushed the lead to 2-0. Then the Knights pulled away against Torres and reliever Marquis Fleming, who combined to allow four hits and four walks in the fourth inning. Dallas McPherson doubled in two runs, with former Bull Dan Johnson driving a three-run double to right field to highlight the inning.

Torres lasted 3 1/3 innings, permitting six runs and seven walks to absorb the loss.

Meanwhile, Charlie Shirek (W, 2-1) worked six scoreless innings, scattering six hits to earn the win.

The Bulls (6-6) scored their two runs in the seventh against Knights reliever Donnie Veal. Leslie Anderson singled, Jeff Salazar doubled and later in the inning a grounder by Kyle Hudson scored Anderson. Will Rhymes stroked a base hit with two outs to pick up a second run.

Anderson finished the night 3-4 for the Bulls, with Jose Feliciano picking up two hits.

The Bulls and Knights have split their first four meetings this season.

The series continues on Tuesday morning at 11:15 AM with Jhonny Nunez starting for the Bulls against Dylan Axlerod.
