Lake Monsters Lose 3-2 On Saturday At Tri-City

Vermont and ValleyCats Will Play Doubleheader Sunday
August 22, 2009
TROY, NY --- Renzo Tello's RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and gave the Tri-City ValleyCats a 3-2 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in the first game of a scheduled New York-Penn League doubleheader that was shortened due to rain at Bruno Stadium on Saturday evening.

Game two of the doubleheader was also postponed and will be made up as part of a twinbill on Sunday at Tri-City beginning at 5:00 pm.

Vermont took an early 2-0 lead in Saturday's game as the Lake Monsters scored single runs in the first and third innings. Sean Nicol's RBI single scored Francisco Soriano in the top of the first inning, but Nicol was later thrown out at the plate on a Destin Hood single. Vermont did get a second run in the third on a Hood sacrifice fly to score Nicol.

The ValleyCats tied the game in the bottom of the third with a pair of unearned runs off Vermont starter Mitchell Clegg. A Sean Nicol throwing error led to the two-run inning on a Jose Altuve RBI double and J.P. Martinez RBI groundout. Tello's RBI double in the fourth scored Brian Kemp, who reached with one out after being hit by a Clegg pitch.

The Lake Monsters were unable to score in either the fifth or sixth inning before the game was stopped just before the bottom of the sixth inning. Vermont (27-33) has now lost two straight overall and five straight road games.
