Lakewood Wins 4th Straight With 4-1 Win

May 29, 2011
It was an absolutely perfect Sunday night on Memorial Day Weekend in Lakewood, NJ as the Lakewood BlueClaws took the first game of the 3 game series from the Delmarva Shorebirds by a score of 4-1. The weather was perfect and the game offered a little bit of everything. There was great Starting Pitching, a big Home Run, and a Major Leaguer making a rehab appearance to boot. Shane Victorino finished 0-4 with 2 K's, but he showed no ill effects of the right hamstring injury that currently has him on the DL for the Phillies. A really nice crowd of 7,430 came out to FirstEnergy Park and they were treated to a really well played ballgame that took just 1:59 to complete.

Just 19-years old, LHP Jesse Biddle pitched well beyond his years Sunday night as he picked up his 3rd victory of the year. Biddle (3-5) pitched into the 7th inning for the first time, and had a very nice final line of 7 IP, 1 Unearned Run, 4 Hits, 1 Walk, and 4 K's. He avoided the free passes which have really been his bugaboo so far this season, and the results were fantastic. Delmarva's lineup was off-balance all night long against the tall lefty, and he showed off the skills that made him the Phillies 1st Round Draft Pick (27th overall) last June. Colby Shreve pitched a scoreless 8th inning for Lakewood, and the Lisalberto Bonilla threw a 1-2-3 top of the 9th striking out 2 and picking up his 3rd save of the year.

Domingo Santana continued his hot hitting with a big HR off of Delmarva reliever Randy Henry. The solo shot was the 6th of the year for Santana, and it was a big insurance run that made it 4-1 which ended up as the final score. Carlos Perdomo finished 2-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. And Jim Murphy had his HR streak stopped at 3 games as he finished the ballgame 1-4 with an RBI double and a run scored.

Monday morning the same two teams will be back at it in Lakewood for game 2 of their 3 game series. The BlueClaws will send out RHP Garett Claypool who is just 1-2, but sports the 2nd best ERA in the SAL at 2.30. Delmarva will counter with LHP Tim Berry who is 1-3 with a 4.31 ERA. First Pitch on Memorial Day Monday is scheduled for 12:05 pm.
