Late rally comes up short in loss to Jacksonville

Thaiss and Ward drive in runs in eighth, Barria only allows one run

MOBILE, Ala. (August 19, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, plated a pair of runs in the eighth inning but came up short in a 5-2 loss to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Saturday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
The BayBears (57-66 overall, 28-26 second half) were trailing 5-0 entering the eighth inning. With two runners on and two outs, Matt Thaiss got Mobile on the board with an RBI double. Taylor Ward followed with a single to drive in Forrestt Allday . With the tying run at the plate, former BayBear Daniel Schlereth induced a groundout to end the inning.
Jaime Barria (1-6) allowed just one run on five hits in five innings pitched. However, the BayBears went scoreless through the first seven innings and Barria was handed his sixth loss.
John Norwood drove in three runs, including a two-run homer in the seventh inning to increase Jacksonville's lead to 5-2. The Jumbo Shrimp (58-65, 28-25) added two more runs in the eighth inning, which started with a K.C. Serna home run.
Dillon Peters (5-2) tossed six scoreless innings, only gave up two hits, and struck out five batters to earn the win.
The BayBears wrap up the five-game home series against Jacksonville Sunday at 5:05 p.m. CT. Right-handed pitcher Luis Pena (0-0, -.-- ERA) is scheduled to make his Double-A debut against righty Joe Gunkel (4-8, 5.05 ERA) for the Jumbo Shrimp.
