Machado Named SAL Player of the Week

First rounder has five homers in the last seven games

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds are pleased to announce that shortstop Manny Machado has been named the South Atlantic League Player of the week for the week of April 25 through May 1. Machado hit .480 during the week with five home runs and 12 RBIs.

The former 3rd overall pick in the 2010 First Year Player Draft led the Shorebirds to a 7-0 mark this past week. The Shorebirds are currently riding a 10-game winning streak into game three against Charleston on Monday. Machado went 12-of-25 (.480) at the plate during the week with five home runs, 12 RBIs, seven runs scored and seven walks. He recorded multiple hits in five of the seven games.

The 18-year old is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak. He has reached base in 11 consecutive games dating back to April 18.

The Miami, Florida native went homerless in his 59 at-bats this season (15 games). Since then, he has connected on five home runs in his last 25 at-bats.

Machado is the first Shorebirds player to receive a weekly award from the South Atlantic League this season. He leads the club in runs scored (19), doubles (6), home runs (5), RBIs (20), walks (17), on-base percentage (.451) and slugging percentage (.639).

He ranks fifth in the South Atlantic League in slugging percentage, second in the league in walks and fourth in the circuit in RBIs.

The Shorebirds and RiverDogs play game three of the series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m.
