Martis Sharp but the Senators fall to the Rock Cats 4-1

May 17, 2011
Shairon Martis looks to be regaining his old form as he threw seven shutout innings on Tuesday night but the bullpen faltered late and the Sens lost 4-1 to New Britain. The Rock Cats improved to an Eastern League best 23-13 with the win while the Sens fell to 17-19 with the loss.

Martis struck out five and allowed just three hits before turning the game over to Patrick McCoy. New Britain tagged McCoy for all four runs, three earned, and four hits. Jimmy Barthmaier came on to finish up, pitching the final 1.2 innings.

The lone run scored by the Sens came on a two-out double by Derek Norris in the fourth which plated Bill Rhinehart. Norris, Steve Lombardozzi, and Archie Gilbert all had two hits for the Sens.

New Britain starter Steve Hirschfield earned his third win on the year against no losses by pitching seven innings.

Game two of the three-game series is Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. with LH Oliver Perez making his first start for the Senators against RH Bobby Lanigan for New Britain. The game can be heard on 1460am The Ticket, on the Internet through the Senators website and on your ipad or iphone beginning at 6:50 p.m.
