Mathisen, Pineda among GCL stars

Bucs' second-rounder, traded Twins outfielder both honored
August 27, 2012
Story and roster updated 9/9. Wyatt Mathisen was one of a few 2012 Draft picks to make an immediate impact, earning a spot on the Gulf Coast League's All-Star team Monday.

Mathisen, a catcher the Pirates selected in the second round out of Calallen (Texas) High School, hit .295 with a homer, 15 RBIs and 10 steals for the GCL Pirates.

Selected as the DH, his teammate Jin-De Jhang was named the squad's catcher. They were joined in the infield by Tigers first baseman Jesus Ustariz, Yankees second baseman Jerison Lopez, Astros third baseman Darwin Rivera, Twins shortstop Aderlin Mejia and Pirates utilityman Matt Foat. Foat ranked second in the league with a .333 batting average and .404 on-base percentage.

The outfielders include Austin Schotts (Tigers), Jeremias Pineda (Twins) and Jose Colorado (Red Sox). Pineda led the GCL with a .365 average and 23 stolen bases in 52 games. He was traded from the Red Sox to the Twins during the GCL season and batted .421 after the move.

A pair of Tigers prospects made the team, with starter Yorfrank Lopez joining reliever Jose Valdez as All-Star pitchers. Valdez had 15 saves in 22 innings for the GCL Tigers, while Lopez won five games.

The team was selected by Major League Baseball Advanced Media and the GCL -- the league is considered a Rookie-level "complex" league and is operated by Minor League Baseball.
