Matt Den Dekker Named EL Player of the Week

June 11, 2012

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Eastern League has named Binghamton Mets outfielder Matt den Dekker as the Player of the Week for the period of June 4-10. Den Dekker hit .630 (17-for-27) and collected four doubles, a triple, nine runs scored and four RBI during the six-game stretch.

Den Dekker racked up two hits or more in every game during the week, raising his batting average to .340, the highest in the Eastern League. The Florida native became the first B-Met since July 2011 to put together a five-hit game, going 5-for-5 against the Trenton Thunder on June 8. He also had a basehit in eight consecutive at bats, a stretch spanning three games (6/7-9).

Now in his second season as a B-Met, den Dekker leads the league in hits (81), doubles (21), slugging percentage (.563), runs scored (47) and total bases (134). He is tied for the Eastern League lead in extra-base hits (33).

Selected in the 5th round of the June 2010 draft by the Mets out of the University of Florida, den Dekker split his 2011 season between the St. Lucie Mets (High-A) and Binghamton Mets (AA). He hit .296 in 67 games with St. Lucie before being promoted to Binghamton in late June. Den Dekker hit .235 and slugged 11 home runs in 72 games as a B-Met last year.

Den Dekker and the B-Mets (29-30) enjoy an off day Monday before starting a three-game series against the Reading Phillies on Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. LHP Mark Cohoon takes the mound for Binghamton against RHP Jonathan Pettibone. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show for the day's action begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
