Mejia involved in reported Lucroy trade

In putting together the Minor Leagues' longest hitting streak in seven years, Francisco Mejia had to adapt to a bump in levels. His next challenge could be moving to a new organization.

Mejia is the centerpiece of a rumored trade that would send two-time All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy from the Brewers to the Indians. While neither team has confirmed the deal, MLB Network's Ken Rosenthal reported Saturday night that the Brewers agreed to send Lucroy to Cleveland for four prospects headlined by Mejia, who extended his hitting streak to 42 games earlier Saturday with an infield single for Class A Advanced Lynchburg.

Also going to the Indians, according to Rosenthal, are shortstop Yu-Cheng Chang, outfielder Greg Allen and another player.

Mejia is the Indians' sixth-ranked prospect. He hit safely in a Midwest League season-high 24 consecutive games for Class A Lake County before a promotion to Lynchburg at the end of June. The 20-year-old switch-hitter did not miss a beat in the Carolina League, where he's batting .329 with two homers and 16 RBIs in 18 games.

"You're talking about a 20-year-old kid from a different country. He's playing at a higher level, so right now, it's like he's the freshman on a varsity team," Hillcats hitting coach Larry Day said Monday after Mejia stretched the streak to 40 games. "For him to be able to execute consistent quality at-bats -- also known as a hit streak -- is great."

Overall, the native of the Dominican Republic is slashing .343/.373/.521 with nine homers and 67 RBIs in 78 games.

Chang, a 20-year-old shortstop from Taiwan, is the Indians' No. 12 prospect. He's tied for second in the Carolina League with 72 runs scored, ranks second with 48 extra-base hits, fourth with 28 doubles and fifth with 69 RBIs.

Allen was teammates with Mejia and Chang in Lynchburg until Sunday, when he was promoted to Double-A Akron. Ranked 22nd among Indians prospects, the 23-year-old outfielder leads all Minor Leaguers with 95 runs scored and is tied for fourth with 39 stolen bases. He's slashing .295/.415/.399 with five homers, four triples, 16 doubles and 35 RBIs in 98 games.
