Midwest League names All-Star teams

Speedy Smith, powerful Coulter to bolster Eastern, Western lineups
June 4, 2014

Call it another feather in his TinCap.

Fort Wayne outfielder and current Minor League stolen base leader Mallex Smith will headline the 50th Midwest League All-Star Classic as the rosters were announced Wednesday for the event to be held June 17 at West Michigan's Fifth Third Ballpark.

The 21-year-old outfielder leads all Minor Leaguers by a wide margin with 42 steals through 54 games with the Padres' Class A affiliate. His closest competition is Great Lakes outfielder Malcolm Holland with 27. Smith owns a .296/.396/.385 slash line with the TinCaps and will start in the outfield for the Eastern All-Star team in two weeks. He is repeating a level after batting .262 with a .707 OPS and league-best 84 steals with Fort Wayne in 2013.

The Western order will have plenty of offense itself, thanks to Brewers No. 11 prospect Clint Coulter. The 20-year-old catcher will start at DH after leading the league in home runs (10) and ranking second in RBIs (41), slugging percentage (.551) and OPS (.978). He will be joined in the Western starting lineup by Beloit outfielder Boog Powell, who leads the circuit with a .340 average.

Lake County right-hander and ERA leader Robbie Aviles (1.45) will head the Eastern pitching staff that also includes Twins No. 4 prospect and 2013 fourth overall pick Kohl Stewart (1-2, 2.76 ERA) of Cedar Rapids. West Michigan's Buck Farmer and Austin Kubitza, who rank first and second in the league with 74 and 68 strikeouts respectively, will return home and lead a Eastern pitching staff that features only right-handers.
