Mitchell throws five hitless innings

White Sox right-handed prospect Andrew Mitchell pitched five hitless innings in his Class A debut as the Kannapolis Intimidators edged the Hickory Crawdads, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon.

Mitchell (1-0) carried a no-hitter into the sixth frame, when he was tagged for a pair of runs on two hits and a walk. Storm Throne came on and recorded the final six outs, striking out two for his first save.

Chicago's No. 18 prospect struck out two in the first, fanned another two in the second around a walk and a steal and worked a 1-2-3 third before working around another two walks in the fourth. The right-hander struck out the final two batters of the fifth before surrendering his first hit of the game in the sixth following a leadoff walk to Lewis Brinson.

The 21-year-old Texas Christian product was Chicago's fourth-round pick in the 2013 Draft and spent his first season with Rookie-level Great Falls last year, going 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 14 starts. 

Mitchell fell six outs shy of what would have been the second no-hitter in the Minors this season -- Red Sox prospect Henry Owens threw a rain-shortened, six-inning no-hitter April 3 for Double-A Portland.
