Myers ending rough month on high note

Pacific Coast League pitchers better watch out when Wil Myers is breaking out of a slump.

The Royals' No. 2 prospect blasted a pair of two-run homers and finished 3-for-5 as Triple-A Omaha rallied to defeat Oklahoma City, 7-6, on Monday.

Hitless entering his third at-bat in the sixth inning, Myers put the Storm Chasers on the board when he took Brett Oberholtzer deep over the left-field wall. One inning later, Myers did it again, this time going opposite field against reliever Fernando Abad.

"I struck out my first two at-bats and I just wanted to get a good pitch to hit. I was just looking for something out over the plate," said Myers, who singled in his last at-bat. "I was just looking for something out over the plate and trying not to do too much."

Over his last three games, Myers is 7-for-13 with three homers and eight RBIs. His hot streak has helped ease the pain of a fairly pedestrian month in which he batted .215 in 20 games prior to this stretch.

"I had been struggling a little bit this road trip. I was just trying to do too much with the trade deadline creeping up, trying to hit the ball out of the park," the North Carolina native said. "These last couple of days, I've just been trying to stay relaxed. I really had to lock back in and do what I've been doing all year."

The 21-year-old outfielder is batting .294 with 19 homers and 57 RBIs in 66 games for the Storm Chasers and has gone yard 32 times in 101 Minor League contests in 2012. No Minor Leaguer has homered 40 or more times in a season since Dallas McPherson hit 42 in 2008. Myers isn't concerned about the possibility of a milestone though.

"I'm not worried about that right now," he said. "I just want to go out every day and try to get a good pitch and not do too much and hit the ball."

Tony Abreu tripled, doubled and drove in two runs for the Storm Chasers.

Jeremy Jeffress struck out two over two hitless innings of relief to improve to 5-4 while Vin Mazzaro closed out his third game with a perfect ninth for Omaha.

Brandon Barnes was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs while Matt Dominguez, the Astros' No. 4 prospect, singled home a pair of runs for the RedHawks.
