MYERS RECEIVES MULTIPLE MiLBY NOMINATIONS

Wilmington Alumnus Up For More Accolades
October 3, 2012
Wilmington, DE - Wil Myers has enjoyed a pretty special year. A month ago, the former Wilmington Blue Rocks star became the seventh player ever to earn both Baseball America and USA Today Minor League Player of the Year honors in the same season. Today, he was nominated for a pair of MiLBY Awards as determined by MLB Advanced Media (BAM). There are 11 awards in total with a dozen nominees apiece. Fan votes will decide the winners. Each fan can vote once a day through Monday, October 22 by CLICKING HERE.

Myers' spectacular season garnered a nomination for Offensive Player of the Year in the minors, while one of his 37 homers is up for Home Run of the Year. Myers finished a dinger shy of 26-year-old Darin Ruf (Double-A Reading; Philadelphia Phillies) for the most in the minors. Among them was the nominated shot, a grand slam off of big leaguer Roy Oswalt on June 7. The blast gave his Triple-A Omaha team the lead en route to a 7-2 win.

The 21-year-old hit .346 in 58 games for Wilmington in 2010 as a catcher/DH. After an injury-riddled 2011 campaign, he opened 2012 as a repeater with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and batted .343 with 13 home runs and 30 RBIs in 35 games. Then came a promotion to Triple-A Omaha in mid-May, and more success. For the Storm Chasers, Myers hit .304 (118-for-388) with 15 doubles, five triples, 24 home runs and 79 RBIs in 99 regular-season games.

The Royals' third-round selection in 2009 collected two hits and drove in three runs for the U.S. squad at the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game in Kansas City on July 8 and then three days later was selected the "Star of Stars" for the Pacific Coast League in the Triple-A All-Star Game after recording two hits, including a double with an RBI and a run scored. At the end of the 2012 season, he was named to the 12-member All-Pacific Coast League squad along with Omaha Player of the Year honors.
