Myers, Sands among PCL's best

Ely, Verdugo, Wall honored for dominance on the mound
August 27, 2012
Wil Myers leads the Minors in homers, and though he hasn't yet gotten the call he's been waiting for, he'll have to settle for one of the Pacific Coast League's highest honors for now.

Myers, with 35 homers this year -- 22 coming with Triple-A Omaha -- highlights a list of prospects and fellow sluggers to make the 2012 PCL Postseason All-Star team, which was revealed Monday afternoon.

Four Albuquerque players -- catcher Tim Federowicz, designated hitter Jerry Sands, righty John Ely and reliever Josh Wall -- made the team, as did the Reno trio of second baseman Jake Elmore, third baseman Ryan Wheeler and outfielder Adam Eaton.

Lefty Ryan Verdugo, who is 12-3 with a 3.37 ERA, joined Myers on the club from Omaha.

Ely is 14-7 with a 3.10 ERA and leads the league in wins and strikeouts (162), while Verdugo is 12-3 with a 3.37 ERA and has won his last five starts.

Wall has appeared in 53 games and leads the PCL with 27 saves.

Sands, currently with Albuquerque, is believed to be one of the players to be named later in Los Angeles' deal with Boston that sent Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto to the Dodgers. The outfielder was claimed on waivers by several teams and is expected to officially be included in the trade after the season.

Myers' 22 homers have elevated him to elite status among power-hitting prospects, and fellow All-Star outfielder Andrew Brown of Colorado Springs has posted equally solid numbers -- he's batting .308 with 24 home runs and 98 RBIs this year. Eaton, hitting .379 with 37 steals, was the team's third outfielder.

"Wil Myers and Ryan Verdugo have been two of the brightest stars in the Pacific Coast League," said Martie Cordaro, Omaha's president and general manager. "They both have a great future in the game and have had major impact on the success that the Chasers have had on the field in 2012."

Adeiny Hechavarria of Las Vegas and Matt McBride of Colorado Springs also earned spots on the postseason team.
