New York-Penn picks All-Star rosters

First-rounder Barnes selected for NL squad, Guerrieri leads AL
August 8, 2012
The National League side will be without two of its strongest first-half performers at next Tuesday's New York-Penn League All-Star game, which is exacerbated by this fact: The American League will sport power-armed pitcher Taylor Guerrieri.

The Class A Short-Season circuit released its rosters for the eighth annual exhibition, which will be hosted by the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio.

State College outfielder Barrett Barnes (Pirates), the 45th overall pick in June's Draft, and Batavia catcher Jesus Montero (Cardinals) were selected to represent the NL but are currently overcoming injuries.

Among those who will help pick up the slack: Tri-City's Andrew Aplin (Astros), who was sporting a 1.000 OPS through 43 games, and Batavia second baseman Breyvic Valera, who is third in the league in batting with a .332 mark.

Hudson Valley right-hander Guerrieri, the Rays' first-round draftee in 2011, leads the AL's pitching staff. He has yet to earn his first pro win but, through seven outings, has compiled a 1.24 ERA and a 25-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Fellow Renegades starter Jeff Ames (3-0, 1.85 ERA) and Mahoning Valley's Luis DeJesus (4-0, 1.41) will also pose a challenge on the pitching rubber.

Twenty-eight players representing were selected to participate on the American League squad. The NL has 30 on its roster to account for Barnes and Montero.
