Oduber highlights Gulf Coast All-Stars

Marlins skipper Hernandez rewarded for first-place finish
September 2, 2010
Nationals outfielder Randolph Oduber was recognized as the Gulf Coast League's MVP on Thursday when Minor League Baseball unveiled the GCL's postseason All-Star roster and award-winners.

Oduber hit .366 with four homers and 30 RBIs, leading the league in average, slugging percentage and a 1.002 OPS. The Aruban-born outfielder was the Nationals' 32nd-round pick in June out of Western Oklahoma State.

The Yankees' Ramon Flores and the Phillies' Geancarlo Mendez joined Oduber in the All-Star outfield; Flores hit .329 with 22 RBIs, and Mendez finished at .329 with six homers and 40 RBIs.

Two other Yankees made the team -- catcher Gary Sanchez, who hit .353 with six long balls and 36 RBIs, and second baseman Anderson Feliz, who finished .274 with four home runs and 27 RBIs. First baseman Kennys Vargas, of the Twins, and third baseman Matt Lipka, of the Braves, rounded out the infield.

Chris Duffy, the Phillies' 26th-round pick out of Central Florida, hit .272 with six homers and 32 RBIs to earn a spot as the designated hitter.

Astros starter Jose Perdomo went 4-3 with a 1.67 ERA, earning All-Star status, and Tigers reliever Bruce Rondon joined the squad after recording 15 saves and a 0.70 ERA.

Jorge Hernandez, who managed the Marlins to a league-best 37-19 record, was selected as Manager of the Year.

The Gulf Coast League is a Rookie-level circuit in Florida operated by Minor League Baseball that typically holds games with free admission during the day at Spring Training complexes. It's often the destination for recently-drafted players -- no player may have three or more years of prior Minor League service.
