Offensive Players of the Week

Here's a look at the top offensive performers in each league for the week ending June 9:

International League
Zelous Wheeler, Norfolk

Wheeler has gotten cups of coffee at the Triple-A level in the past two seasons but is enjoying his first extended stint after joining the Tides on May 16. The Tides are enjoying it too, as the 26-year-old infielder is hitting .400/.455/.720 over his last 12 games. Wheeler bookended his week with huge games, clubbing a pair of solo blasts against Buffalo on Monday before delivering a homer, double, single and four RBIs at Indianapolis on Sunday. Wheeler has fanned just seven times in 77 at-bats with Norfolk.

Pacific Coast League
Luke Montz, Sacramento

Returning to Sacramento after a stint with the big league Athletics, Montz made his presence felt immediately during the River Cats' road trip to Tacoma and Tucson. The veteran backstop went 4-for-5 with a homer, double and six RBIs against the Rainiers Tuesday before adding another long ball and five RBIs in the Cats' 14-5 rout of the Padres on Friday night. After hitting 51 homers and driving in 152 runs over the past two seasons, the 29-year-old Montz has eight long balls and 25 RBIs in just 21 games with Sacramento this year.

Eastern League
Cesar Puello, Binghamton

If Puello is concerned about being named in an ESPN Outside the Lines report on MLB's investigation of the Biogenesis clinic in Florida, it hasn't shown on the field. The Mets prospect strung together six consecutive multi-hit games before going 0-for-4 on Sunday, crushing six long balls during the stretch. The offensive surge has pushed the 22-year-old outfielder into the Eastern League lead with a .606 slugging percentage; he ranks second in home runs (13), third in batting (.326) and seventh in on-base percentage (.401).

Southern League
Kyle Jensen, Jacksonville

Most players go through hot and cold streaks during the season, but few reach the extremes that Kyle Jensen does. The 25-year-old outfielder began the week in a 4-for-26 (.154) slump over his previous nine games before embarking on a four-game home run streak against Mobile and Birmingham. It's not the first time Jensen has gone power-mad -- he went on a five-game longball tear last August. The slugger was held hitless Saturday and interrupted by rain Sunday, so the Southern League may be safe for a little while.

Texas League
Brian Fletcher, NW Arkansas

After missing nearly two months with a broken hamate bone, Fletcher returned to action showing no signs of rust Thursday. The Royals' No. 17 prospect homered twice, doubled and drove in four runs in Northwest Arkansas' 10-4 rout of visiting Tulsa. The 24-year-old Auburn product was limited to singles in his next two games but added another blast and double Sunday as the Naturals rallied to top Arkansas, 7-5.

Max Muncy, Stockton

Muncy is another streaky power slugger, though in a more compressed fashion. The Stockton first baseman posted his third multi-homer game of the season Wednesday, going deep three times in the Ports' 13-7 win over visiting Lancaster. The two clubs tied a Cal League record with 11 combined long balls on a night with a 16-mph wind blowing out to center field, but Muncy was the only hitter with more than one blast. He added two more homers on Friday and Sunday to take over the league lead with 15 on the season, while his 54 RBIs rank second.

Carolina League
Courtney Hawkins, Winston-Salem

The White Sox's first-round pick in 2012 and top prospect (No. 62 overall) missed a month after suffering a shoulder injury making a diving catch, returning to the Dash lineup on June 2. Two days later he demonstrated the abundant power that makes him so prized a prospect, going deep twice and driving in five runs in Winston-Salem's 12-5 win at Salem. The 19-year-old Texan has 11 long balls in just 32 games this season -- second most in the Carolina League, despite playing just over half the games of the leader, Lynchburg's Robby Hefflinger -- but has also fanned 58 times (one more than Hefflinger) in 113 at-bats.

Florida State League
Anthony Garcia, Palm Beach

After bashing 19 home runs for Quad Cities in the Midwest League last season, Garcia has had a tough time in his first two months with Palm Beach. In his 17 games heading into last week's action, the 21-year-old outfielder was 4-for-61 (.066) with 21 strikeouts and two runs scored. Things turned around rather abruptly at Tampa on Monday, where Garcia homered, tripled and doubled in four at-bats. He added three more hits, including a long ball, the next day, and went deep three times in back-to-back games Thursday and Friday. Garcia cooled off Saturday, going 0-for-3, but drew a pair of walks -- just his second and third free passes since May 7.

Midwest League
Tyrone Taylor, Wisconsin
(.522/.607/.870, 6 G, 12-for-23, 3 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 6 R, 4 BB, 4 K, 1 SB)
Taylor hit .236 in May, but the hits began coming in bunches as the calendar flipped to June. The 19-year-old outfielder -- Milwaukee's second-round pick in the 2012 Draft -- is batting .500 with hits in each of his eight games this month, including a pair of three-hit contests against visiting Beloit on Wednesday and Friday. Along with the hits have come walks: six of his 16 on the season have come this month, allowing Taylor to score three times in the Timber Rattlers' 11-9 win over Clinton Sunday.

South Atlantic League
Tom Murphy, Asheville
(.444/.524/1.000, 5 G, 8-for-18, 4 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 5 R, 1 BB, 6 K)
The Rockies' third-round pick last June, Murphy has been concentrating on his defense in his first full season. His offense has hardly suffered, however -- he leads the Minor Leagues with a .685 slugging percentage and 1.106 OPS and has driven in 45 runs in 41 games. Last week was a representative sample of his outstanding campaign: four multi-hit games, six extra-base hits and seven RBIs to earn his second Sally League Offensive Player of the Week award of the season.
