Owings, Hellweg lead All-PCL Team

The Pacific Coast League is known as one of the hitter-friendlier leagues in the Minors, but only a select few sluggers can stand above the rest and prove that they are the best the circuit has to offer. Even a more select few do the same on the mound. The PCL honored those from each group Monday.

D-backs No. 3 prospect Chris Owings, A's No. 2 prospect Michael Choice and Brewers No. 3 prospect Johnny Hellweg headline this year's All-PCL Team as announced by the league.

Owings -- MLB.com's No. 86 prospect -- was named the circuit's top shortstop after leading the league with 170 hits and ranking third with a .331 average through 118 games. It is the first time the 22-year-old, who also played in this year's Futures Game and Triple-A All-Star Game, has been honored in the postseason during his five-year Minor League career.

Choice, who ranks five spots behind Owings on MLB.com's Prospect Watch, nabbed one of the outfield spots thanks to a .300/.386/.443 slash line with 14 homers and 88 RBIs (second-most in the league) for Sacramento. RBI leader Nick Buss (94 for Albuquerque) and Corey Dickerson (Colorado Springs) round out the rest of the outfield.

In line for the PCL batting title with a .333 average through Sunday, Tucson's Dean Anna received a nod at second. Memphis' Brock Peterson boasts a .300/.371/.540 slash line with a league-best 24 homers and as such took the spot at DH with Efren Navarro of Salt Lake (.326/.408/.455/7/67) being honored at first.

Ryan Wheeler, who moved from the D-backs organization to the Rockies last offseason, is on his fourth straight PCL All-Star team including mid- and postseason squads, earning the nod at third base.

The 6-foot-9 right-hander Hellweg impressed at the Triple-A level in his first full season in the Brewers organization, going 11-5 with a 3.16 ERA and league-best .226 opponents' batting average over 22 starts with Nashville. As such, he was deemed the league's best right-hander in 2013.

Marlins No. 9 prospect Brian Flynn was rewarded for his work as a left-hander after leading the league with a 2.86 ERA for New Orleans to go with his 1.19 WHIP (fourth) and 117 strikeouts (tied for sixth). Flynn's teammate Chris Hatcher led the circuit with 32 saves to earn his spot as best reliever.
