Owlz Power Past Ghosts in 23-1 Romp

June 22, 2011

The Orem Owlz (2-0) brought out the bats early and often, pounding 26 hits in a 23-1 win over the Casper Ghosts (0-2). The Owlz also got an outstanding pitching performance by Pil Joon Jang (1-0). Jang went six scoreless innings, giving up only one hit and one walk.

"PJ had a very good outing and he will be moving to the Midwest League tomorrow," said Manager Tom Kotchman.

The promotion comes during Jang's second year as an Owl, but it was the young guys who played a key role at the plate in tonight's win.

Taylor Lindsey continued his stellar play, tying a Pioneer League record with six runs scored. Lindsey went 4 for 5 with two doubles and a 2-run home run.

"It is a team effort: each day and every day. If I do great, it's awesome, but it's about all of us," said Lindsey.

Brandon Brewer and Frazier Hall were both drafted in 2011, and both had a huge impact in tonight's win. Brewer finished 3 for 4 with four runs scored, while Hall went 4 for 6, scoring 4 and driving in three, including a solo home run.

The Ghosts pitchers struggled throughout, as Raul Fernandez (0-1) surrendered 10 runs in 3 plus innings to get the loss, and Jeremiah Sammy gave up nine runs in relief.

The Owlz scored two in the 1st inning on RBI doubles by Lindsey and Kaleb Cowhart. Five more runs came home in the 2nd on a 2-run double by Brewer, a 2-run homer by Lindsey and a solo home run by Hall.

Everyone contributed in the middle innings, as the Owlz scored 11 runs in innings four through six, and another five runs in the 7th frame. Jarrod Parks brought some power from the nine spot in the batting order, smashing two home runs. Ryan Jones and Gary Mitchell also went deep in the contest.

The Owlz will look to continue to carry the hot bats into tomorrow's contest against the Ghosts. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm.
