Palm Beach's Miller fans 10, wins

The amazing thing is, it wasn't even a season-high in strikeouts for Shelby Miller.

The St. Louis prospect went six innings and whiffed 10 while earning his first Class A Advanced win, allowing one run on four hits and three walks over six innings for Palm Beach on Monday. His Cardinals topped the Bradenton Marauders, 5-1, wrapping up a three-game sweep.

Miller, who is MLB.com's No. 20 top prospect, fanned 11 over 5 2/3 frames against Charlotte on April 13, but he gave up four runs -- two earned -- and wound up without a decision in that game.

He was at it early Monday, striking out Bradenton's leadoff man in the 10:35 a.m. start. He got the next guy on the ground and fanned the third hitter in the inning.

The Marauders threatened in the second inning, as Miller walked two in a row with one out. Adalberto Santos legged out an infield single to load the bases, but the 20-year-old righty put an end to the Bradenton fun then, striking out the next hitter and getting the following batter to pop out to second base.

A double and a single in the third accounted for the only run Miller permitted, and after fanning two in the fifth, he struck out the side in the sixth.

The Cardinals grabbed Miller out of a Texas high school with the 19th overall pick in the 2009 Draft, and he pitched just three pro innings that season. Last year he was 7-5 with a 3.62 ERA in the Midwest League, striking out 140 in 104 1/3 innings.

His 10 strikeouts Monday put him first in that category in the Florida State League and second in all of Minor League Baseball, trailing only Asheville's Edwar Cabrera.
