PawSox play first game of the spring

March 17, 2011

The Pawtucket Red Sox opened their spring training schedule with a 4-3 loss to the Norfolk Tides (Baltimore) on Wednesday afternoon in Sarasota, FL.

RHP Kyle Weiland got the starting assignment and was impressive tossing 3 scoreless innings while allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk with 3 strikeouts. Newcomer Clevelan Santeliz took the loss allowing 2 runs in the 4th-inning before settling down with a scoreless 5th-inniing of work. Santo Luis yielded 3 infield singles which led to 2 runs in the 6th-inning. Tommy Hottovoy and T.J. Large, two members of the PawSox bullpen last season, each worked a hitless inning of relief.

CF Che-Hsuan Lin went 2-for-3 with a single and an RBI double in the 4th-inning while fellow Taiwan native Chih-Hsien Chiang crushed a solo HR in the 7th-inning. The PawSox pushed across a run in the 9th-inning but their comeback bid fell just short.

Pawtucket travels to Port Charlotte, FL on Thursday to take on the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay).
