Perkins to be recalled from Triple-A

CHICAGO -- If the Twins had needed an additional starter for their rotation two weeks ago, left-hander Glen Perkins would likely not have been the one to get the call.

But a recent turnaround has earned Perkins the call to take over Scott Baker's start on Saturday against the Red Sox.

"The reason he is the guy is that his last two outings have been outstanding," Anderson said. "Before that, he'd been very inconsistent, which is the reason why we sent him down. Not only to pitch more innings, but to find consistency with all of his pitches. And the last two outings, he's been really good."

In each of his last three starts for Rochester, Perkins has pitched five-plus innings -- including a nine-inning complete-game shutout against the Phillies' Triple-A Lehigh Valley club on April 26. In that start, Perkins allowed just two hits while striking out seven.

The left-hander had been scheduled to start for Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday night. To keep Perkins from having too long of a layoff before his start on Saturday, Anderson said that the pitcher instead would throw a bullpen session on Wednesday.

Perkins has experience at the Major League level, having spent limited time in a relief role for the Twins during the past two seasons. Saturday will mark his first-ever Major League start.

Although Perkins is taking Baker's spot in the rotation, the Twins filled his roster spot with right-hander Kevin Slowey, who will start Thursday against the White Sox. An additional roster move will have to be made, and it likely will involve the Twins reducing their bullpen from eight pitchers to seven.

Perkins is set to rejoin the team sometime on Friday and Anderson said an official roster move will be announced after Friday's game vs. Boston.
