Pioneer League quintet leads All-Stars

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Adam Eaton, who led the classification with a .385 batting average, and MVP Jake Lemmerman are among the five Pioneer Leaguers that comprise half of the Topps Short Season/Rookie All-Star Team. The best performances in all Minor League Baseball classifications are again being honored by the Topps Company of New York in conjunction with Minor League Baseball.

Cody Hawn, 22, of Knoxville, Tenn., drove in 61 runs for the Helena Brewers, tied for second in the classification. The first baseman hit .308 and ranked among the top five in the Pioneer League in RBIs, homers (13), doubles (20), slugging percentage (.542) and OPS (.948). The Milwaukee Brewers selected Hawn in the sixth round of the June Draft out of the University of Tennessee.

Billy Hamilton, 20, of Taylorsville, Miss., led short-season players with 48 stolen bases for the Billings Mustangs and finished second in the classification with 10 triples. He also led Pioneer League second baseman with a .979 fielding percentage. The Cincinnati Reds drafted Hamilton in the second round in 2009 out of high school.

Ramon Morla, 21, of San Pedro Macoris, Dominican Republic, hit .323 and led the Appalachian League with 17 homers and 60 runs. The Pulaski Mariners third baseman was second in the league in batting average, RBIs (49) and hits (81). The Seattle Mariners signed him as a non-drafted free agent in July 2006

Jake Lemmerman, 21, of Newport Beach, Calif., tied for the classification lead in runs (69) and doubles (24). The Ogden Raptors shortstop, named the Pioneer League's MVP, also ranked among the top six short season-players in average (.363), slugging percentage (.610) and OPS (1.044). The Los Angeles Dodgers took Lemmerman in the fifth round in June out of Duke University.

Oswaldo Arcia, 19, of Cantaura-Anzoategui, Venezuela, led the Appalachian League in average (.375), RBIs (51), hits (97), on-base percentage (.424) and slugging percentage (.672) on his way to league Player of the Year honors. He also led the circuit's outfielders with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with the Elizabethton Twins, handling all 99 chances that came his way. The Minnesota Twins signed Arcia as a non-drafted free agent in July 2007.

Corey Dickerson, 21, of McComb, Miss., had 44 extra-base hits to tie for the classification lead and his 61 RBIs tied for second best among short-season players. The Casper Ghosts outfielder also ranked among the top five players in his class in doubles (22), triples (9), slugging percentage (.634), hits (96) and OPS (1.046). The Colorado Rockies selected him in the eighth round in June out of Meridian (Miss.) Community College.

Adam Eaton, 21, of Springfield, Ohio, hit .385 with a .500 on-base percentage, both tops in the classification. The Missoula Osprey outfielder led Pioneer Leaguer players with a 1.075 OPS. The Arizona Diamondbacks took Eaton in the 19th round in June out of Miami (Ohio) University.

Gary Sanchez, 17, of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, hit a combined .329 with eight homers and 43 RBIs for the Gulf Coast League Yankees and Staten Island Yankees. The catcher's 36 RBIs in 31 GCL games ranked second in the circuit. Sanchez was hitting .353 with a 1.016 OPS when he was promoted to Staten Island. The New York Yankees inked him as a non-drafted free agent in July 2009.

Chris Wallace, 22, of Pasadena, Texas, finished among the Appalachian League leaders in average (.310), home runs (8), on-base percentage (.390), OPS (.910) and slugging percentage (.520). The Greeneville Astros catcher played in 47 games, before earning a promotion to the Tri-City ValleyCats in the New York-Penn League. Wallace threw out 37 percent of the runners who attempted to steal bases against him with Greeneville and 14 of 25 (56 percent) with Tri-City. The Houston Astros took Wallace in the 16th round in June out of the University of Houston.

Jose Perdomo (19) of Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela, posted league best marks in average against (.172), average strikeouts per nine innings (10.47) and fewest runners allowed per nine innings (9.10) in being named the Gulf Coast League Pitcher of the Year. The Astros right-hander went 4-3 and also ranked among the top five hurlers in the GCL in ERA (1.67), strikeouts (69), WHIP (0.98) and innings pitched (59 1/3). The Houston Astros signed Perdomo as a non-drafted free agent in December 2008.
