Pitchers of the Week

Here's a look at the top pitching performers in each league for the week ending July 14:

International League
T.J. House, Columbus
(2-0, 0.75 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 12 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 6 BB, 11 K)
House's transition to Triple-A has been bumpy -- he's 3-9 with a 5.15 ERA in 15 starts -- but the 23-year-old left-hander took two big steps last week against first-place Indianapolis. Hosting the Indians on Tuesday, House allowed one hit over six scoreless frames. Back in Indiana on Sunday, he held the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate to one run while fanning six over six innings. House had lost each of his previous seven starts before notching the two victories over Indy.

Pacific Coast League
Asher Wojciechowski, Oklahoma City
(1-0, 0.60 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 1 CG, 1 SHO, 15 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 3 BB, 8 K)
Asher Wojciechowski, the Astros' No. 15 prospect, turned in a pair of solid starts last week to earn his first weekly award since April 22. A first-round pick in 2010, Wojciechowski faced the minimum while allowing just one hit and a walk over nine innings in the RedHawks' 5-0 win at Round Rock on July 8. He was perfect through five frames. He followed that up by limiting New Orleans to five hits and a run over six frames July 13.

Eastern League
Virgil Vasquez, New Britain
(2-0, 0.53 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 1 CG, 17 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 2 BB, 18 K)
A veteran of 19 Major League appearances, Vasquez was out of affiliated baseball for the last two seasons before hooking on with the Twins this spring. After going 2-6 with a 5.28 ERA in his first 15 outings with Triple-A Rochester, the 31-year-old right-hander reported to the Eastern League for the first time since 2006. Vasquez lost two of his first three starts but bounced back strongly last week, allowing one run on four hits while going the distance at Portland on Monday, then tossing eight scoreless, one-hit frames against Trenton on Sunday. Vasquez fanned nine batters apiece in the two victories.

Southern League
David Goforth, Huntsville

The jump to Double-A is supposed to be the most difficult transition rising Minor Leaguers have to navigate, but Goforth is making it look easy. Following a rough debut June 25 and a so-so follow-up July 1, the 24-year-old Mississippi product tossed a seven-inning shutout at Tennessee on Monday before firing another seven scoreless frames against Birmingham on Saturday. Through four starts, Goforth is holding Southern League hitters to a .195 average.

Texas League
Carlos Hernandez, Midland
(2-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 12 1/3 IP, 10 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 2 HBP, 3 BB, 9 K)
Hernandez first pitched for the RockHounds in 2009, and though he's had better records -- he was 6-1 that first year -- 2013 has been his finest Texas League effort, with a 5-7 record belying a 2.78 ERA (fourth-best in the league). The 26-year-old left-hander notched two of those victories last week by tossing 6 1/3 scoreless frames against Arkansas on Monday and six shutout innings Sunday against Corpus Christi. Hernandez has now allowed one earned run over his last 21 1/3 frames.

California League
Raul Alcantara, Stockton
(1-0, 0.69 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 13 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 4 BB, 16 K)
Having gone 7-1 with a 2.44 ERA for Class A Beloit earlier this season, Alcantara has been even better since his promotion to Stockton, posting a 3-0 record with a 1.82 mark. The right-hander piled up 16 strikeouts in his two starts last week earning a win against Visalia on Monday and a no-decision against High Desert on Saturday. The former Red Sox farmhand began the season as the Athletics' no. 11 prospect, but with a 10-1 overall record, his stock is on the rise.

Carolina League
Kyle Zimmer, Wilmington
(2-0, 1.64 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 11 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 1 BB, 23 K)
Though Zimmer leads the Carolina League (and is eighth in the Minors) with 113 strikeouts, he's also fourth on the circuit in earned runs allowed. The Royals' right-handed prospect found another gear for the Pelicans last week fanning 13 and 10, respectively, in wins over Frederick and Lynchburg. Zimmer yielded one run apiece in the two games and improved his overall record to 4-8 in his first full season as a pro.

Florida State League
Matt Loosen, Daytona
(2-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 2 CG, 2 SHO, 16 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 3 BB, 13 K)
A Cubs prospect in his fourth season with the organization, Loosen earned league honors after two stellar outings, including Daytona's first nine-frame no-hitter since 1996. On July 8, the right-hander struck out nine and walked two in the Cubs' 7-0 victory over Dunedin. He followed that up when he held Jupiter to four hits over seven frames on July 14.

Midwest League
Wandy Peralta, Dayton
(0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G, 0 GS, 5 2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 0 BB, 5 K)
The Reds prospect earned recognition for his most recent outing when he threw 5 2/3 hitless innings against Cedar Rapids, a gem that came five days after he held South Bend to just five hits over five frames on July 7. Both of those appearances came in relief -- the lefty in his fourth seasons has not allowed a run in his last five games.

South Atlantic League
Matt Taylor, Delmarva

Orioles lefty prospect Matt Taylor retired 16 straight batters at one point during his eight-inning gem on July 12 at Lexington, helping him earn Sally League honors for the first time. The 2011 fifth-round pick has allowed one hit, struck out five batters, walked three and has not allowed an earned run over 13 innings in his last two starts. "Our game plan really was to throw a lot of sinkers and then the changeup behind it," Taylor said. "We stuck with that pretty much all game."

New York-Penn League
Tanner Bushue, Tri-City

Tanner Bashue, the Astros' second-round pick in 2009, made his third start of the season count on July 11 when he held Mahoning Valley to a pair of hits over six innings for his second win in five outings. A righty who has spent parts of the last three seasons at Class A Lexington, Bushue is now 2-1 with a 2.38 ERA in five appearances (three starts) for Tri-City.

Northwest League
Tyler Olson, Everett

Drafted in the seventh round of this year's Draft, Mariners prospect Tyler Olson pitched a complete-game one-hitter in his fifth professional start on July 10, striking out 10 and issuing just one walk in Everett's 5-0 win over Eugene. "I was just throwing strikes, getting ahead of batters, throwing first-pitch strikes," Olson said. "The off-speed stuff was working really well, too, and I was just over the plate, had pretty good command tonight and let the defense work.

Appalachian League
Michael Flores, Danville

Braves prospect Michael Flores, in his first season above the Dominican Summer League, has turned in a pair of nice starts in four outings this season, including a one-hit gem July 9 against Bristol. A lefty who signed with Atlanta in 2011, Flores tossed five scoreless frames in his Appy League debut June 21 and followed that up with a pair of mediocre outings before striking out seven for his first win of the season last week.

Pioneer League
Eduard Reyes, Helena
(1-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 1 GS, 9 1/3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 3 BB, 10 K)
Eduard Reyes, a Brewers right-hander, earned the nod this week after a pair of scoreless outings for Helena. The 22-year-old Dominican first held Idaho Falls to one hit over 4 1/3 innings of relief to pick up his second win on July 9 and then allowed one hit while striking out eight over five frames in a no-decision against Ogden on July 14. In five outings (two starts), Reyes has struck out 19 and allowed four earned runs in 20 2/3 innings.
