Pitchers of the Week

On Thursday the oft-injured Hamels -- the No. 1 pitching prospect in the Phillies' organization -- showed just how devastating he can be when he's healthy. In his Triple-A debut, the 22-year-old lefty struck out 14 over seven innings while allowing just three hits as the Red Barons rolled to a 5-0 victory over Norfolk. With a few more outings like that, Hamels could soon be a Philadelphia resident. The City of Brotherly Love could certainly use him.

Pacific Coast League
Aaron Sele, Las Vegas
1-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 12.2 IP, 9 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 12 SO

Sele, who has won 137 Major League games over 13 seasons, is doing his best to prove that he has a lot of life left in his well-traveled right arm. The 35-year-old didn't allow a run over 12 2/3 innings this past week, lowering his ERA to 2.43.

Eastern League
Scott Mathieson, Reading
2-0, 1.29 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 14.0 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 18 SO

Reading's week was bookended by a pair of dominating, near-identical performances by Mathieson. On Monday, the flame-throwing lefty allowed one run in seven innings while striking out 11. On Sunday, he surrendered one run in seven innings while fanning seven. The end result was the same: a Phillies victory.

Southern League
Phil Dumatrait, Chattanooga
2-0, 0.75 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 12.0 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 14 SO

Against West Tenn on Tuesday, Dumatrait allowed one run over five frames to pick up his first win of the season. But that was just a prelude to Sunday. The 24-year-old righty surrendered just two hits in seven shutout innings while striking out 10 as the Lookouts eked out a 1-0 win over Carolina.

Texas League
Chad Fillinger, San Antonio
2-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 0 GS, 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO

It's rare for a middle reliever to earn Pitcher of the Week honors, but Fillinger won both of the games he appeared this week to prompt the nod. On Monday, the right-hander tossed three shutout innings (the fourth, fifth and sixth) as the Missions rallied for a 7-5 win over the Rockhounds. On Saturday, Fillinger hurled four more scoreless innings to help San Antonio hold on for a 9-7 win over Arkansas.

California League
Jesse Ingram, Bakersfield
2-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 0 GS, 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 12 SO

It's déjà vu all over again. Like Fillinger, Ingram is also a middle reliever who tossed seven shutout innings spread out over two appearances (also on Monday and Saturday, strangely enough). Perhaps Ingram's week was even more impressive than Fillinger's, however. On Monday, the 24-year-old struck out nine batters over four perfect innings.

Carolina League
Matt Harrison, Myrtle Beach
2-0, 0.64 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 14.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 11 SO

Myrtle Beach has won eight straight ballgames, and Harrison has certainly done his part. The 20-year-old lefty allowed just one run in each of his outings tossing eight innings on Monday, and six on Saturday. His 2.12 ERA is eighth-best in the Carolina League, and no one has hurled more than his 29 2/3 innings.

Florida State League
Kevin Slowey, Fort Myers
1-0, 0.75 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 12.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 11 SO

Slowey's week consisted of a pair of six-inning, two-hit, one-run games. The only significant difference between his two outings was that on Monday he got a no-decision, while on Sunday he finally earned his first win of the year. And he deserved it: his 1.53 ERA is fourth in the league, while his 34 strikeouts rank second. Somebody get this guy some run support.

Midwest League
Wade Davis, SW Michigan
2 G, 2 GS, 0 CG, 0 SHO, 2-0, 0.82 ERA, 11.0 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 BB, 18 SO, 0 SV

Davis' scorching start to the season continued unabated this week as the 20-year-old allowed just one run over 11 innings, earning a pair of victories in the process. The amazing thing about Davis' week is that the one run he allowed raised his season ERA to 0.67. Meanwhile, his 18 strikeouts pushed his league-leading total to 40.

South Atlantic League
Brent Leach, Columbus
1 G, 1 GS, 0 CG, 0 SHO, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 5.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 14 SO, 0 SV

At first glance, Leach's weekly totals don't seem like much: just one five-inning start in which he allowed two unearned runs on two hits. He didn't even earn a victory. But then you get to the strikeout column: 14. That's right, of the 15 outs Leach recorded in his start against Asheville on Friday, all but one was a strikeout. Now that's Pitcher of the Week material.
