Plays at plate kill Salem-Keizer in 3-0 loss to Vancouver

The Volcanoes recorded more hits than the Canadians but failed to score after two runners were out at home. Back-to-back homers in the sixth sealed the series-opening win for Vancouver.

KEIZER - Salem-Kezier lost 3-0 at Volcanoes Stadium on Sunday, despite outhitting Vancouver 9-7.

Lorenzo Mendoza handled Vancouver's lineup mostly with ease, racking up seven strikeouts. Mendoza did allow three earned runs, but surrendered just four hits and no walks over six innings of work. His one speed bump was in the sixth inning.

Kyle Anderson got the win for Vancouver. He tossed 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball. Anderson struck out no one, but walked just one while giving up six hits.

Vancouver stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the second, scoring one run on an RBI double by Dwight Smith, Jr. The Canadians tacked on another two runs in the sixth. Kellen Sweeney kicked things off with a solo home run. That was followed up by Balbino Fuenmayor's solo blast in the next at bat.

Salem-Keizer's chances to score in the fifth and sixth innings were erased on outs at the plate. Ryan Jones was out trying to advance home following a single by Kentrell Hill. Mitch Delfino was gunned out at home while trying to score from second off of a single.

Kentrell Hill led the Volcanoes with two hits. Seven out of the eight remaining batters each recorded one hit on the evening for Salem-Keizer. Matt Newman and Kellen Sweeney led the hits column for Vancouver with two apiece.

Salem-Keizer looks to get back on the winning track in Monday's contest, which is set to get underway at 6:35p.m. from Volcanoes Stadium. Chris Stratton is set to take the hill versus a to be determined pitcher for the Canadians.
