Profar named Low Class A Player of the Year

September 26, 2011
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads, South Atlantic League affiliate of the Texas Rangers, announced on Monday that SS Jurickson Profar has been named Baseball America's 2011 Low Class A Player of the Year and the starting short stop on the publication's 2011 Minor League All-Star Team.

Profar joins 1B Andrew Clark on Baseball America's Low Class A All-Star Team, while former Crawdads LHP Robbie Ross (High-A) and SS Jordy Mercer (AA) also made 2011 Classification All-Star Teams.

Profar, the 2011 South Atlantic League MVP, was also named to the SAL Annual All-Star Team after hitting .286 with 12 home runs and 23 stolen bases this season. Just 18 years old, Profar was tied for second in the league with 37 doubles and third with 86 runs scored. The doubles are the most ever in a single season by any Crawdad. The Willemstad, Curacao native also ranked among league leaders in on-base percentage (.390), slugging percentage (.493) and walks (64), while leading the team in numerous offensive categories.

Clark, 24, played in 103 games with the Crawdads before being called up to High-A Myrtle Beach on Aug. 14. The Indianapolis, IN native led the SAL with a .422 on-base percentage and was second with a .313 batting average, while slugging 12 home runs to go along with 24 doubles. His .904 on-base-plus-slugging percentage was good for fourth in the league as well.

Ross, 22, started 16 games on the hill for the Crawdads in 2010 and spent the majority of the 2011 season with the High-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans. With the Pelicans, Ross led the Carolina League with a 2.26 ERA, while going 9-4 in 21 games, including 20 starts. Ross walked just 28 batters in 123 1/3 innings and was second in the league with a 1.05 WHIP, before finishing the season and pitching in the playoffs with the AA-Frisco RoughRiders.

Mercer, 25, split the 2011 season between the Altoona Curve (AA - Pittsburgh) and the Indianapolis Indians (AAA - Pittsburgh). With the Curve, Mercer hit .268 with 13 homers and 48 RBIs in 72 games. He spent the 2008 season in Hickory, hitting .250 with four home runs and 18 RBIs in 50 games that year.
