Q&A with SL president Don Mincher

Southern League's top man looking forward to Opening Day in Huntsville

After spending 19 years as a player in both the Minor and Major Leagues, Don Mincher became the general manager of the Huntsville Stars of the Southern League in 1984, later purchasing the team as part of a group in 1994. During his tenure as owner, the team was successful at the gate and in the standings. Mincher was elected president of the Southern League in 2000. His resume includes more than 200 big-league homers and a World Series championship with the 1972 Oakland A's, as well as two Southern League Executive of the Year Awards.

Most likely Huntsville.

What are you most looking forward to in the 2008 season?

I always enjoy Opening Day.

Please ask that question again at midseason because right now I don't know.

What is one little-known fact about being a league president?

The league president -- and his staff -- is involved in every transaction that takes place, from relocation to new ownership groups, etc.

What is your favorite part about being league president?

The league president -- and his office -- is involved in all Minor League transactions in his league.

What would you be doing if you didn't work in baseball?

That's simple: Retired.

What's your favorite Minor League promotion?

Fireworks.

What is your favorite Minor League memory?

Becoming general manager of the Huntsville Stars in 1985.

Have you ever witnessed a no-hitter? If so...when and where?

As a player for the Twins in 1962, I witnessed Jack Kralick pitch a no-hitter in Minnesota against Kansas City.

I would not be a Minor League mascot.
