Rain Washes Away Bats, Mud Hens Win 5-1

July 30, 2009
Louisville, KY - On a dreary night at the ballpark, the Louisville Bats dropped the third game of a four-game set against the Toledo Mud Hens, 5-1. The game was delayed three times before the rain was officially too much to overcome in the bottom of the sixth inning. A brave crowd of 7,440 fans gathered at Louisville Slugger Field to watch the Bats break their two-game winning streak.

Travis Wood (0-1, 4.63), making his second career Triple-A start, was touched for five runs, leaving the game in the sixth inning. Wood struck out four batters on the night.

The Mud Hens showed no signs of being slowed by the rain, touching Wood for four runs on four hits in the top of the first inning. Four of the first five batters recorded hits for Toledo, including a two-run home run by Wilkin Ramirez to cap the offensive explosion and give the Mud Hens an early 4-0 lead.

Louisville responded in the last half of the first with a run of their own, on a trio of singles by Drew Stubbs, Darnell McDonald, and Kevin Barker. Stubbs led off the game with a hit and was moved to second by McDonald. Barker was able to drive in Stubbs to cut in to the Toledo lead, making the score 4-1.

Following the second rain delay after the first inning Wood settled in to a little bit of a groove. He allowed only a pair of hits over the next three innings and didn't find trouble again until the sixth.

In the sixth, Toledo tacked on one more run, giving the game its' final tally of 5-1. Wilkin Ramirez led off the inning with a base hit. After Brent Clevlen was plunked by Wood, Bats' manager Rick Sweet decided to pull Wood and give the ball to Ramon Ramirez. Ramirez was able to strike out Brent Dlugach, but allowed the next batter, Ryan Roberson, to drive in Ramirez from second base.

The Bats batted in the bottom of the sixth but with Barker on first and Danny Dorn at the plate, rain began to fall again and after 45 minutes the game was officially called.

Ruddy Lugo (9-8, 4.56) picked up the victory for the Mud Hens. He pitched a complete game, which was 5.1 innings, allowing a single run, while striking out four batters.

The Bats and the Mud Hens will conclude the four-game stretch tomorrow at Louisville Slugger Field. Probable starters for the match-up are RHP Kip Wells (2-0, 2.81) for Louisville against RHP Nate Bump (3-0, 2.22) for Toledo. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Come out and enjoy the 2$ Michelob happy hour before the game and fireworks after the conclusion.
