Red Sox Select LHP Rich Hill to Active Roster

The Boston Red Sox on Monday selected left-handed pitcher Rich Hill to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Pawtucket. Hill will be active for tonight's game in Seattle, wearing No. 53. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club transferred first baseman Kevin Youkilis to the 60-day disabled list. The Red Sox active Major League roster is now at 35 players.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Hill, 30, combined to go 7-4 with a 4.00 ERA (44 ER/99.0 IP) and 102 strikeouts in 42 appearances (10 starts) this season between the Cardinals Triple-A affiliate in Memphis and Triple-A Pawtucket. The left-hander signed with the Red Sox as a minor league free agent on June 30 and posted a 3-1 record with 55 strikeouts in 19 appearances (six starts) for the PawSox, leading the team with a 3.74 ERA (22 ER/53.0 IP) after his July 1 debut. A native of Milton, MA, Hill is 21-20 with a 4.87 ERA (214 ER/395.1 IP) and 355 strikeouts in 78 career appearances (70 starts) over parts of five Major League seasons with the Cubs (2005-08) and Orioles (2009).

Youkilis, 31, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on August 3 with a right thumb adductor muscle tear. He hit .307 (111-for-362) with 26 doubles, five triples, 19 home runs, 62 RBI, 77 runs scored and 58 walks in 102 games with the Red Sox this season.
