Red Sox's Britton charged with DUI

Drake Britton, Boston's No. 12 prospect, was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence near the club's Spring Training complex Saturday morning in Fort Myers, Fla.

The 23-year-old left-hander additionally was charged with DUI property damage and reckless driving after allegedly being clocked doing 111 mph. According to Lee County Sheriff reports, Britton knocked over a barbed wire fence and tried to continue driving. The hurler allegedly told the arresting officer that he had been drinking.

"We take every situation like that seriously," Red Sox manager John Farrell told MLB.com. "In this case, with Drake, it's still being addressed. We're still gathering information and the facts of what transpired. Fortunately, in this case, there was no one injured, but the bottom line is that it's a very serious issue with us."

Britton was released later Saturday morning after posting a $2,250 bond and will appear in court March 18.

A 23rd-round pick in 2007, Britton is making his first appearance in Major League camp with the Red Sox. He was 4-7 with a 3.72 ERA in 16 starts for Double-A Portland in 2012.

Britton isn't the only Red Sox prospect to run into some trouble this offseason. Bryce Brentz, the club's No. 7 prospect, is expected to miss most of camp after accidentally shooting himself in the leg while cleaning his gun at his home in February. He is expected to make a full recovery.
