Redbirds' Taveras injures right ankle

Oscar Taveras, MLB.com's No. 3 overall prospect, injured his right ankle sliding into second base and was helped off the field in Triple-A Memphis 7-4, 11-inning loss to Fresno on Sunday.

The Redbirds would not comment on Taveras' status after the game, but Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that X-rays were negative and the Cardinals' top prospect is listed as day-to-day.

Taveras suffered the injury while stealing second base in the bottom of the ninth inning of a 4-4 game. After singling with two outs, he took off for second on a 1-2 pitch and beat catcher Jackson Williams' throw for his fourth stolen base.

The 20-year-old outfielder went into the bag with his left foot first, but overslid and appeared to injure his right ankle on contact. Taveras immediately reached back and grabbed his ankle while in obvious pain and was only able to put minimal weight on his right leg as he was helped off the field by a member of the Redbirds training staff.

The native of the Dominican Republic went 2-for-5 for his fourth multi-hit game of the week and is batting .317 with four homers, 20 RBIs and an .831 OPS in 31 games.

Vance Albitz ran for Taveras and was stranded at second when Brock Peterson struck out.

Fresno scored three times in the 11th to take the lead as Cole Gillespie, Johnny Monell and Juan Ciriaco hit consecutive singles off reliever Barret Browning (0-2). Gary Brown, the Giants' No. 2 prospect finished 3-for-6 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.

Cardinals No. 3 prospect Kolten Wong also had three hits and scored a run for Memphis, which got six solid innings from starter Nick Additon.
