Reds, Brewers reach AZL Finals
The Reds and Brewers will meet Tuesday in a one-game showdown for the Arizona Summer League crown.
Ismael Guillon struck out eight and allowed three hits over five shutout innings as the Reds triumphed over the Giants, 6-5, on Monday.
Guillon, who led the Arizona Summer League with 73 strikeouts in 12 games during the regular season, settled in after a rocky opening inning. Giants' leadoff hitter Gary Brown opened the frame with a triple. After walking Carlos Willoughby, Guillon struck out the next two batters before plunking Charles Jones to load the bases. But he struck out 18-year-old Nicholas Nodgren to get out of the jam.
The Venezuelan native then retired eight in a row before Nodgren singled in the fourth. Guillon also walked two.
Leadoff batter Ronald Torreyes was 3-for-5 and drove in five runs, falling a homer shy of the cycle. David Vidal doubled twice and collected an RBI, while first-round pick Yasmani Grandal tripled and singled. Juan Silva tripled and scored twice for the Reds.
Brewers overcome early deficit, rally past Rangers
Kyle Dhanini hit a key double and Yadiel Rivera homered to lead the Brewers to a 6-5 win over the Rangers.
Dhanini hit a go-ahead two-RBI double with one out and bases loaded in the eighth inning. It was the only hit of the night for the Brewers' 2009 43rd-round pick. Rivera slugged a three-run homer in the second after the Rangers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first.
Brewers starter Charley Bashara allowed four runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings. Gregory Holle was credited with the win in relief, allowing a hit and fanning three in 2 2/3 shutout innings.
Rangers starter Carlos Melo struck out 13 and allowed three runs on four hits over six innings.
