Renegades Take the Birds in Extras

After 11 Innings Birds Lose 2-1

ABERDEEN, MD- In the first game of the final series this season at Ripken Stadium, the IronBirds and Hudson Valley Renegades competed in a pitching duel last night, allowing minimal hits and no runs in four innings. In extra innings, after keeping the Renegades scoreless for eight innings, the IronBirds gave up the win 2-1.

Birds RHP Brady Wager notched a career-high six strikeouts in his 6.0 innings pitched and gave up a season-low two hits. Renegades RHP Jesse Hahn, in his first professional season after missing the 2011 season following Tommy John surgery, struck out five batters in five innings, and gave up five hits and one run.

Hudson's 2B Thomas Coyle picked up his 19th stolen base of the season in the top of the fourth inning before being left stranded by a ground out from SS Leonardo Reginatto.

IronBirds plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. C Sam Kimmel scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from LF Will Howard. Last night Hahn gave up his first run since August 10th; Hahn held 19 consecutive innings without a run.

Visiting Aberdeen on rehab assignment from the Bowie Baysox, DH Aaron Baker got his first hit of the night in the bottom of the sixth. Baker smacked a deep double to CF Joey Rickard.

Relief LHP Josh Hader continued his scoreless streak in his fourth game with the IronBirds. Hader picked up his sixth consecutive scoreless inning last night in the top of the eighth after 2.0 innings pitched.

Following eight scoreless innings for the Renegades, DH Richie Shaffer tied the game with a solo homerun over left field in the top of the ninth against RHP Sander Beck. In the next inning, Beck struck out the side in order to move to the bottom of the tenth.

In the top of the 11th, Birds RHP Jose Nivar gave up the leading run to Hudson Valley when Shaffer scored from second on an RBI infield single from Reginatto.

Renegades closing pitcher Marcus Jenson (5-1, 3.90) took the win last night after2.0 innings pitched and four strikeouts. IronBirds Jose Nivar (2-3, 4.83) took the loss after 1.0 innings.

The IronBirds will play their second to last home game September 1st at Ripken Stadium. RHP Sebastian Vader (1-7, 3.92) will toe the rubber for the Birds while LHP Matt Spann (3-5, 3.96) will start for the Renegades. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and coverage on the IronBirds Radio Network will begin at 6:50 p.m.
