Report: Reed charged with sexual assault

Toledo Mud Hens right-handed pitcher Evan Reed has officially been charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct stemming from a March incident at the Motor City Casino Hotel in Detroit, according to a report Wednesday by the Detroit Free Press.

According to Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy, Reed met a 45-year-old woman at around midnight on March 30 and invited her and a friend to sit with him and others at a bar booth. The woman "began to feel odd" after having an alcoholic drink, Worthy's office said, and alleged that Reed sexually assaulted her the following morning in his hotel room.

The charges carry a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison He is expected to turn himself in, Worthy said.

"As an organization, we take matters like this very seriously and we are closely monitoring the situation," the Tigers said in a statement. "Evan Reed's representatives are handling his legal proceeding that must run its course before there is any further comment from the ballclub."

Reed was designated for assignment by the Tigers on June 18 after he posted a 4.88 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in 27 appearances with the big club. He was sent to Triple-A Toledo a week later and had given up eight earned runs in 10 1/3 innings (6.97 ERA) across eight appearances with the Mud Hens prior to Wednesday's news. The 28-year-old right-hander has also spent time in the Rangers and Marlins organizations.
