Reyes, Memphis no-hit Norfolk in exhibition

Five Redbirds pitchers combine for 5-3 victory over visiting Tides
April 1, 2006
With Opening Day less than a week away, St. Louis Cardinals prospect Anthony Reyes is already showing why he is one of the organization's top prospects.

The Memphis starter combined with four Redbirds relievers on a Spring Training no-hitter against visiting Norfolk, beating the Tides, 5-3, on Saturday.

Reyes was efficient over the first five innings, retiring the Tides on just 52 pitches while striking out seven and walking one. The right-hander compiled a 7-6 record and a 3.64 ERA with Memphis last season. He also went 1-1 in four games and made one start for St. Louis.

Four relievers followed with a hitless inning apiece. Kevin Ool fanned two and walked one in the sixth. Chris Russ whiffed one and walked one in the seventh. Josh Kinney worked a perfect eighth inning. The Tides scored all their runs via errors in the final frame against Franklin Perez.

Brian Esposito homered for the Redbirds. John Gall had three hits, including an RBI triple. Rayner Laya added a two-run triple in the eighth inning.

Memphis will take on Springfield in an intrasquad game at 12:30 p.m. ET on Sunday. The two teams will face off again in an exhibition game Tuesday at the brand-new Busch Stadium in St. Louis. MiLB.com will provide live video coverage of the game in its entirety at 7 p.m.
