San Jose joins in on strange Te'o tale

Giants affiliate announces 'Lennay Kekua Night' promotion
January 19, 2013
It appears no person -- not even a made-up person -- is safe from being memorialized with Minor League Baseball club promotions.

The Class A Advanced San Jose Giants, a San Francisco affiliate, announced Friday night their intention to host "Lennay Kekua Night" at their April 12 game this coming season.

The promotion came the same day that the Class A Lake County Captains, a Cleveland Indians affiliate, said it would "honor" cyclist Lance Armstrong at its June 29 game.

Kekua, of course, was the fictitious girlfriend of Notre Dame football player Manti Te'o. Deadspin.com broke the odd story involving Te'o on Wednesday.

According to the release by San Jose, fans with a ticket to the April 12 game can bring their imaginary or real significant other free of charge.

"Despite the fun and wacky nature of this night, the San Jose Giants recognize the serious nature of a person being diagnosed with a deadly disease such as leukemia or lymphoma," the release notes, referencing the false tale of Kekua's death. "As a result, the organization will host an auction on April 12 and make a donation to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society®."
