School project raises $5,325 for Haiti

EVERETT, Wash. -- In a school project that took on a life of its own, the Haiti Coin Drive for UNICEF raised $5,325 in one week. Originally the idea of members of Kokanee Elementary School, a partnership with local sports teams helped to push the event over the top.

Coins were collected at Kokanee Elementary and the AquaSox offices, as well as before the Washington Stealth's Jan. 22 game. In addition, the AquaSox donated an additional $500 and the Stealth donated all proceeds from program sales at their game to the drive. All told, more than $2,942 in coins and $2,383 in cash and checks were donated in less than a week's time.

"It has been absolutely amazing to watch this event come together," said AquaSox community relations manager Katie Crawford. "In four days they raised more than $5,000. It is a real testament to the students and staff at Kokanee, as well as the Washington Stealth, who were quick to open their doors and help."

According to the Washington Stealth, there was no reason to hesitate in joining such a great event. "We are extremely thankful to Kokanee and the AquaSox for involving us in this amazing event. We were thrilled to see our fans step up and help out such a worthy cause," said Breanna Kernan, director of community relations for the Stealth. "It was a great reminder that a small gesture really can have a big impact."
