Seven St. Lucie Mets Named to FSL All-Star Team

The Florida State League announced today the league selections for the 2012 North and South All-Star Teams. Representing the St. Lucie Mets will be pitchers Cory Mazzoni, Chase Huchingson, and Adam Kolarek as well as catcher Blake Forsythe, third baseman Wilmer Flores, shortstop Wilfredo Tovar, and outfielder Cory Vaughn.

The Mets, which won the Florida State League South Division Championship in 2011, will have their entire field staff represented for the South Division All-Star Team. The Mets field staff includes manager Ryan Ellis, pitching coach Phil Regan, hitting coach Benny Distefano, coach Jose Carreno, trainer Deb Iwanow, and strength and conditioning coach Jake Henderson.

The All-Star Game will be played at Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte, Florida on Saturday, June 16, at 7:05 p.m.

Cory Mazzoni has been selected to his first All-Star team as a professional. He is 4-0 with a 3.10 ERA to lead the Mets starting rotation. Mazzoni was the Mets 2nd round pick in the 2011 draft out of North Carolina State. In 52 1/3 innings, Mazzoni has struck out 38 while walking 14.

Chase Huchingson has been selected as an All-Star for the second straight year. Huchingson was named to the South Atlantic League All-Star Game last season with the Savannah Sand Gants. He is 5-4 with a 3.14 ERA through nine starts. Huchingson started the season with a 17 2/3 scoreless innings streak. The lefthander has struck out 49 batters in 51 2/3 innings and has limited opponents to a .219 batting average against.

Adam Kolarek has been one of top relievers in the Florida State League and will make his first All-Star appearance. In 20 relief appearances, Kolarek is 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA. He has surrendered just five runs in 25 innings while striking out 37 and walking seven. Kolarek was selected by the Mets in the 11th round in the 2010 draft out of the University of Maryland.

Catcher Blake Forsythe will also represent the Mets in Port Charlotte. Forsythe is hitting .283 with four home runs and 22 RBIs. He has 26 hits, seven doubles, and a .511 slugging percentage. Forsythe was a third round draft pick by the Mets in 2010 from the University of Tennessee.

Third baseman Wilmer Flores has been selected to the All-Star Team and previously was named an All-Star with Kingsport in 2008 and with Savannah in 2010. Flores is fifth in the Florida State league with a .330 batting average. He is tied atop the league with 10 home runs and ranks fourth with 34 RBIs. Flores ranks second with a .543 slugging percentage and is also second in the league with 102 total bases.

Shortstop Wilfredo Tovar is hitting .285 with one home run and 17 RBIs. Tovar has 25 runs scored, 47 hits, 12 doubles, and 10 stolen bases. Tovar was signed by the Mets as a non-drafted free agent in 2007.

Outfielder Cory Vaughn will make his third consecutive All-Star appearance after being recognized in 2010 with Brooklyn and during the 2011 campaign with Savannah. Vaughn is tied for first in the Florida State league with 10 home runs and has 26 RBIs. He has 28 runs scored, 44 hits, and nine doubles. Vaughn was drafted in the fourth round in 2010 out of San Diego State University.
