Sextet of Barons Selected to All-Star Game

June 8, 2011

Hoover, AL - The Southern League announced Wednesday that six Birmingham Barons players, Dylan Axelrod, Tyler Kuhn, Charlie Leesman, Christian Marrero, Dan Remenowsky and Brandon Short were selected to the 2011 Southern League All-Star Game that is set for Tuesday, June 21, at Jackson's Pringles Park, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Matt Zaleski was an honorable mention for the All-Star Game due to his promotion to Triple-A Charlotte earlier in the season.

Axelrod, 25, has been the Barons ace this year posting a 3-2 record with a 3.45 ERA (22 ER/57.1 IP) and is averaging one strikeout per inning pitched. He is top-10 in the league in ERA, strikeouts (57) and WHIP (1.10). This is the UC-Irvine product's first minor league all-star game selection.

Kuhn, 24, leads the Southern League in hitting with a robust .360 (73-for-203) batting average and is second in on-base percentage (.428) while driving in 31 runs and scoring 31 runs. This is his third all-star selection in four minor league seasons, having previously been named a Pioneer League All-Star in 2008, and to the South Atlantic League all-star squad in 2009.

Leesman, 24, is another important part of a strong Barons pitching rotation. The southpaw owns a 5-1 record with a 3.95 ERA (25 ER/57.0 IP). He is in the top-10 of the Southern League in wins and games started (12). This is Leesman's first professional all-star game appearance.

Marrero, 24, has put together a strong first half of the season hitting .330 (73-for-221) while leading the Barons in home runs (9), RBI (34) and runs scored (41). He is top-five on the Southern League leader boards in triples (7), slugging-percentage (.584), extra-base hits (31) and total bases. He was named a 2007 Baseball America Rookie All-Star and a 2009 Carolina League All-Star. This is his second all-star game appearance.

Remenowsky, 25, is the anchor of a strong Barons bullpen with a 3-1 record and six saves while posting a 2.73 ERA (9 ER/29.2 IP). The right-hander collected the win in the Rickwood Classic and earned a save the very next night earlier this month. He is in the top-five of Southern League relievers in opponent batting average (.155), strikeout per nine inning ratio (12.44) and leads the SL in fewest base runners allowed per nine innings (6.37) and fewest walks per nine innings (1.21). This is his second all-star game appearance after being named a 2009 South Atlantic League mid-season All-Star.

Short, 22, has been a steady everyday presence in the Barons lineup producing a .297 batting average (70-for-236) along with being second on the team in home runs (7) and doubles (17). He ranks second in the circuit with 16 stolen bases. This is Brandon's second All-Star game appearance. He was named a 2010 Carolina League mid-season and post-season all-star.

Zaleski, 29, received an honorable mention for the 2011 Southern League all-star team. The right-hander began the season with the Barons but was promoted to Triple-A Charlotte over three weeks ago. While with the Barons he had a 3-3 record with a 2.74 ERA (15 ER/49.1 IP). He still qualifies as the current league leader in WHIP (0.99) and opponent batting average (.198) in addition to raking third in the league in ERA.
