Shorebirds bash way to 9-2 win

KANNAPOLIS, NC - The Delmarva Shorebirds brought the bats on Sunday evening at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, beating the Kannapolis Intimidators 9-2.

Delmarva racked up 18 hits, the most any team has registered this season against Kannapolis. A majority of the damage was done against starter Charlie Leesman (4-4), who allowed six runs, four earned, on 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Delmarva got four runs in the top of the sixth inning to chase Leesman from the game and break a 2-2 deadlock. Three Delmarva players-Greg Miclat, Ron Welty and L.J. Hoes-had three hits in the game.

The Intimidators (24-26) had previously rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game in the third inning on a two-run home run from Sergio Morales, his fourth of the season. The long ball came off of starter Nathan Moreau (1-1), who took the victory in five innings of work.

The Shorebirds (26-20) put the game away with three runs in the top of the eighth off of Leroy Hunt.

Sergio Santos and Garrett Johnson did look strong on the mound for Kannapolis, but it was too little too late. Santos, who after seven minor league seasons as an infielder has converted to the mound, threw one scoreless inning in his debut. Johnson retired all five batters he faced, including three on the strikeout.

Kannapolis also committed a season-high four errors, including two on Jose Vargas, leading to three unearned runs.
