Shreve no-hits Delmarva through five in 5-2 win

August 15, 2010
LAKEWOOD, NJ - Colby Shreve, Julio Rodriguez, and Mike McGuire combined to three-hit the Delmarva Shorebirds Sunday evening in a 5-2 BlueClaws win.

Shreve (7-5) allowed a run in five no-hit innings, striking out five. Reliever Julio Rodriguez kept the no-hitter alive through six and struck out six in three innings. McGuire threw a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season.

Ty Kelly singled to start the seventh and break up the no-hit bid. Keoni Ruth made a magnificent diving stop and almost got the throw to first in time, but Kelly beat it out as Jonathan Singleton was pulled off the bag.

BlueClaws (30-19) pitchers have allowed just nine runs over the team's last five games.

Delmarva (19-30) managed to score a run in the first against Shreve. TJ Baxter drew a lead-off walk, took second on a wild pitch, and stole third before coming home on a fly ball that Leandro Castro dropped in left.

The Claws drew even in the second. Jeremy Barnes doubled with one out, and Ruth singled him home with two outs.

Singleton started the third with a solo shot, his 13th of the season to push the BlueClaws ahead 2-1. Barnes then drew a two out walk, and Kyle Lafrenz hit an RBI double for a 3-1 Lakewood lead.

The Claws scored two more in the fifth. Stephen Batts singled to extend his hit streak to 11 games, and Michael Dabbs hit an RBI double down the first baseline. One out later Lafrenz singled in Dabbs to make it a 5-1 game.

Baxter hit an RBI single to cut the deficit to three in the eighth, but that was as close as the Shorebirds would get.

Pat Kantakevich (0-6) let up five runs in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss.

Monday night at 7:05 pm the two teams will wrap up the five-game series. RHP Jonathan Pettibone (5-5, 3.77) will go up against RHP Bobby Bundy (2-5, 4.28).
