Simon Shines as T's Blast Season-High 22 Hits in 16-3 Win

July 24, 2012

Jared Simon came to the plate in the bottom of the eighth 4-for-4 and a triple shy of the cycle. The Tourists right-fielder crushed a Justin Erasmus offering a mile high deep to center. The ball hit high off the wall and bounced back towards the infield as Greenville's center fielder Cody Koback chased after it.

Simon was handed the triple on a silver platter with the way the play unfolded, but Jared showed class. Simon pulled up halfway to second base and stopped at the bag as the ball was rolling around in center. With Asheville leading 14-3 at the time, Simon displayed one of the greatest acts of sportsmanship many of the fans had ever seen and settled for a perfect 5-for-5 night. Some might ask who didn't see the game; would Jared have made it to third on the play and recorded the cycle? The answer is yes, he would have made it standing up.

As for the rest of the hit barrage, Asheville tied a season-high with five Home Runs, set a season-high with seven doubles, and scored 16 unanswered after falling behind 3-0. Chris Jensen picked up his 11th win of the season by going six for the home team while the bullpen notched three scoreless innings in relief.

Jordan Ribera started the scoring with a solo Home Run in the fourth and three batters later, Simon clubbed a three-run bomb to center. Taylor Featherston and Trevor Story combined for two out RBI singles in the fifth and sixth, putting Asheville up 6-3.

In the seventh, Simon blasted his second three-run Homer of the game making it 9-3 Asheville. The eighth inning became a hitting clinic as the Tourists scored seven runs on eight hits (5 doubles, 2 Home Runs, and 1 single). David Kandilas and Will Swanner each went deep in the frame.

Simon finished the game 5-for-5 with 2 Home Runs, 2 Doubles, 4 Runs Scored, 7 RBI's, and one of the greatest acts of sportsmanship in the game of baseball.
