Sixers Clinch Playoff Spot With 1-0 Shutout

August 29, 2011

Stockton, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers are headed to the California League Playoffs for the first time since 2008 after shutting out the Stockton Ports 1-0, in the final game of the series Monday night at Banner Island Ballpark.

Casey Haerther poked a ball that just got through the infield with Kole Calhoun coming around to score the lone run in the game. " I got jammed but it snuck up the middle to score the run, it was exciting."

Jose Guzman took his second loss in the series in relief, after Stockton starter Murphy Smith was dominant against the 66ers lineup through seven innings.

A.J Shugel was equally as masterful throwing five innings allowing no runs on three hits with three strikeouts.

Buddy Boshers entered the game to start the sixth inning and after getting one out but loading the bases, before handing things over to Caleb Graham. The big right-hander struck out Dusty Coleman and got Ryan Lipkin to fly out to left field to end the inning.

The bullpen continued to put up zeros as Daniel Tillman pitched a scoreless eighth inning, followed by Kevin Johnson closing things out in the ninth for his fifth save of the season to send the Sixers to the postseason.

The 66ers will head back down south to begin a three game series at Lake Elsinore. Inland Empire will send Manuel Flores (12-9, 5.56 ERA) to the mound opposite Aaron Breight (1-1, 7.40 ERA) and the Storm at Pete Lehr Field.
